Blended Learning

Blended learning is an approach to teaching that gives the students more ownership over how they access and submit work, and how they choose to communicate (be it digitally, on paper, or any mixture of the two). The best way for a student to become proficient at critical thinking, self-managing and choosing the best communication method is to provide them with more opportunities to practice. Towards this end, Maidstone Intermediate has embraced the concept of digitally enhanced classes through a “bring your own device” (BYOD) initiative.

A blended learning environment isn't a case of giving the student access to technology and free reign to do whatever. Rather it is a case of structuring and providing learning and options with clear expectations to allow the students to choose the right tool for the task at hand. When a blended learning environment is working to its fullest it will be hard to tell when the school day starts or finishes as the students will be able to log into their device as soon as they arrive at school, as well as accessing their work from home.

There is no one device or brand that we require students to have at Maidstone. However, we do recommend all devices have a screen size of 7 inches (200mm) or larger, they must only be wifi capable (unable to access the cellphone network) and they must come with a protective cover or case.

If your child is new to Maidstone, we suggest you contact his/her teacher in the first few weeks of the year as they will be able to offer some guidance. No child will need a device on their first day of the new school year.

We also strongly recommend that your childs device has some form of tracking app or software installed and that you can access it from your home computer with a unique username and password.
