The Education Review Office | Te Tari Arotake Mātauranga (ERO), is the New Zealand government’s external evaluation agency that informs and facilitates improvement in early learning services, kōhanga reo, puna kōhungahunga, and kura.

Education reviews are reports to boards of trustees, on the quality of education provided for tamariki and ākonga in kura. The purpose of ERO’s reviews is to give parents and the wider kura community assurance about the quality of education that kura provide and their tamaiti receive. An ERO kura report answers the question “How effectively is this kura curriculum promoting ākonga learning - engagement, progress and achievement?” Under that overarching question ERO reports on the quality of education and learning outcomes for tamariki and for specific groups of ākonga including Maori ākonga, Pacific ākonga and ākonga with special needs. ERO also reports on the quality of the kura systems for sustaining and continuing improvements.

ERO are moving from event-based external reviews to supporting each kura in a process of continuous improvement – so that every kura is a great kura and every tamaiti is a success.
